Jay Leno, you entitled prick, you gave up the Tonight Show and then whined and schemed and stabbed Conan in the back (just like you stabbed Letterman in the back) to get your way. I hope someone beats you with a stick.

Life Out east preview track #2: Easy rider

Posted on | January 9, 2010 | No Comments

again, this is a very rough mix. I will be adding harmonies on the chorus and probably an electric guitar solo (*coughmilazzocough*) where it sounds like there should be one.

but! new yoga album! new yoga album! again, comments on the song, mix, etc encouraged.

chink floyd live at sidewalk cafe

Posted on | January 5, 2010 | No Comments

OK, so here’s something…

I play in a band called Chink Floyd, “The world’s worst Pink Floyd cover band”. The band features yrs truly, Ariel Bitran, Mike Milazzo (absent from this particular gig), Killer Kelly Dwyer, and Touching You. The band is fronted, of course, by Master Lee. I work with Master Lee in a couple different improv/spoken word projects (The White Devils, The World’s Worst DOORS cover band, etc…) but this is probably my favorite. Here’s a snippet of what we do, from our Dec 19, 2009 gig at Sidewalk Cafe in the East Village.

comments, etc.? We have a myspace page here and you can friend us to keep up with shows, etc. Check us out, we are definitely a singular experience.

So I’m listening to The Sixty One today at work, as I sometimes do, and this totally cool clarient/drone thing came on. The Sixty One is this Creative Commons driven site where people put their music up and people vote on it, etc. Like last.fm but without keywords. [ed note: i have my music up there at www.thesixtyone.com/joeyoga and you can download it all for free]. The Sixty One also seems to focus more on instrumental/ambient music and Garage Band solo artists, whereas every major label artist has a last.fm site (I’m there too) so for that reason I prefer it when I am looking to dive in to the random. There is a lot of crap there (no names) but there is also cool stuff like untitled demos and sometimes you can find a real gem.

The one song I heard today that I liked enough to bring it up to the internet at large (another one of my “new” “year’s” “resolutions” being to both blog and hunt for new music more often) is by a band called Swimmingpool the Band and it’s called Pslam (Evening) so I guess that’s a music recommendation from me to you. I don’t like saying you SHOULD listen to them and I hate saying “You’ll love it!” even more, especially in a weird public space like the internet, because one, who the hell are you and how do I know you’ll like it, and two… well, ok. Maybe there IS just one reason.

One day I will find my Permanent Autonomous Zone, and it will be bigger than an elevator and you will be able to see me on the other side, working, with the heads of Republican senators on sticks, sharpened at both ends, natch.

Lyrics

I gotta send what I can’t receive home
I’d have it made were it not for these old

paper thin walls

We understand it could all be breached, though
You would not believe
What could pass through these old

paper thin walls

kill the band feat. Birch!

so… one of the new projects I’m in is Kill The Band, which is the brainchild of the awesome Kelly Dwyer. We’re going to be featured at the Frigid Festival this February! But that’s not what this post is about. Every once in a while at Penny’s Open Mic we do “Covers Night”, which is a chance for the performers to pay tribute to each other. It’s always a super fun night. So at the most recent covers night (last week) the great Mike Birch decided to cover Kill the Band’s “Famous Baby”… here is the video!!

Joe Yoga is an artist, facilitator, and incorrigible force of nature based in New York City. He is working these days mainly in black and white, guitar, cassette tape, hand claps, acrylic, and the burdens of rage, love, and exhaustion towards "a sort of land-where-blues-began attentiveness to the half-broken heartbeat of a sound" (Nick Courage, A Mutual Respect Books and Music).

As a musician he appears at venues all over NYC and his first album "The Dreamless Sea" is available for free download at www.goyogago.com, His new album "Life Out East" will be available in Spring 2010.

As a stage performer he was recently featured in Kill the Band (Audience Choice Award Winner, 2010 Frigid Festival) and Ramblings of a Gentleman Scumbag (Imperial Award / Donor's Choice, 2010 Frigid Festival). He is also half of the house band at Penny's Open Mic, a massively popular Tuesday mic in the East Village (www.pennysopenmic.com), and produces a monthly show "Grudge Match: Music vs. Comedy" on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, featuring the best up and coming musicians and comedians in the city.
