So I’m listening to The Sixty One today at work, as I sometimes do, and this totally cool clarient/drone thing came on. The Sixty One is this Creative Commons driven site where people put their music up and people vote on it, etc. Like last.fm but without keywords. [ed note: i have my music up there at www.thesixtyone.com/joeyoga and you can download it all for free]. The Sixty One also seems to focus more on instrumental/ambient music and Garage Band solo artists, whereas every major label artist has a last.fm site (I’m there too) so for that reason I prefer it when I am looking to dive in to the random. There is a lot of crap there (no names) but there is also cool stuff like untitled demos and sometimes you can find a real gem.

The one song I heard today that I liked enough to bring it up to the internet at large (another one of my “new” “year’s” “resolutions” being to both blog and hunt for new music more often) is by a band called Swimmingpool the Band and it’s called Pslam (Evening) so I guess that’s a music recommendation from me to you. I don’t like saying you SHOULD listen to them and I hate saying “You’ll love it!” even more, especially in a weird public space like the internet, because one, who the hell are you and how do I know you’ll like it, and two… well, ok. Maybe there IS just one reason.

One day I will find my Permanent Autonomous Zone, and it will be bigger than an elevator and you will be able to see me on the other side, working, with the heads of Republican senators on sticks, sharpened at both ends, natch.

Hey there, aspiring performers of NYC! Let me introduce you to bullshit.

Now that my one man show is done, I’m out looking to get booked at bars for music as I prep my songs to record my album. I decided to troll craigslist because I’ve gotten lucky there before with people needing to fill slots. I saw an ad for “Acoustic Musicians wanted” so I emailed them to find out what the deal was.

I’m not going to post names of the bar or the production company because my intent here isn’t to smear anyone, it’s to educate. To tell people You Simply Don’t Have to Do This.

Hi Joe,

I can put you on for THIS Friday, December 4th, at 11:30pm….. or the 18th …8:30pm. I just ask that you bring at least 6 people down to see you please. (we ask for ten but I’ll be lenient)

There is a $10.00 cover on Fridays and there are usually about 7 acts that play on a Friday night. The club keeps the first ten people that pay to see you, everyone thereafter to see you you keep.

go to xxxxxxproductions.com and hit [name of bar], then hit backline, photos, calendar etc…

I’ll need to know ASAP ok???

thanks and hope you’ll join us!

J

Ok…

So I am expected to bring 10 people, at ten bucks a pop, to see a night of musicians pulled from Craigslist? I saw two touring bands and a local opener last week at Cake Shop for eight bucks. That’s problem one.

Secondly, Ok, so I bring ten people. Let’s say those people average a drink each. I have now brought $160 bucks into the bar and I still haven’t made anything. If I bring the magic 11th person then I make ten bucks.

This is a great deal if you bring 50 people into the club, but let’s face it… these kind of small bar, shitty PA nights are geared towards people just starting out. They don’t have a real following as a performer. If they did they wouldn’t be playing nights like this. And when they’re set up this way, they’re a scam. Because if they were really trying/expecting to get 50 people into the club, it would be a % of everything past ten, not all to the performer.

Bars don’t need creepy “production companies” to have a night of fucking acoustic music. Get a half decent PA and have a musician come in and run a night. Try to build a community instead of trying to scam fifty bucks out of some artist who doesn’t know better. Communities STAY and DRINK.

Bars are fucking lazy. There’s so much great music in this town, charging ten bucks for a bill of thrown together singer songwriters is like practically begging for it not to happen. Have a headliner, at least. Doesn’t need to be a name but at least someone GOOD.

If you see something like this, run. I dealt with this shit all the time when I was in bands. You bring 9 people, they count them all. You bring 17 people, all of a sudden it’s 12. I don’t know this bar they’re talking about, looks like a little place on the LES. But there are TONS of places like this where you can play for free. Or put together a really great night, charge five bucks, and everyone makes money. If there’s three parties involved, and only two are guaranteed money, you’re fucked.

It’s been a long, tortuous journey for me to start selling my music online. I’m not going to go into details about why it’s taken me so long, but suffice it to say that recently I got the ability to upload large files to the internet and have been moving forward with this. My ultimate goal is to find an mp3-selling service that will allow me to get my whole mp3 library online. There’s over 100 mp3s of seventy or so songs, not even counting the hundreds of hours of 4-track demos that I’m going to start going through once I have this all figured out.
I still get quite a few hits on my myspace page, and I’ve seen friends with their little SNOCAP players selling mp3s for 99 cents so I figured, OK, let’s start there while waiting for itunes to review and accept my “content provider” application.

Unfortunately it’s not that easy. On the SNOCAP site, it makes it sound very easy.
1. Log in to myspace!
2. Click the “create your store” link!
3. Copy and paste this code!
4. ???
5. Profit!
Unfortunately, there’s no “create your store” link on myspace anywhere. Searching the myspace FAQ for “create store” gives no help and, even more bizarre, searching for SNOCAP reveals no results at all.

So I fired off a letter to customer support at myspace.

Hello, I signed up for a SNOCAP account which a friend of mine is using to sell his mp3s through myspace. On the SNOCAP site, under the “Post to Web” section, it gives the following instructions. But re: #2, I do not see this “create your store” link anywhere. I searched the FAQ for music store and there were no responses. please advise.

This was the response:

Hello,
Thanks for contacting MySpace Music!
We aren’t currently set up to support SnoCap related questions or issues, but if you email snocapsupport@imeem.com you should receive a response from one of their representatives within the next 48 hours.

This is bullshit for a lot of reasons. Myspace playing dumb on SNOCAP might have something to do about SNOCAP laying off 60% of its workforce, or being bought out by imeem, and while there’s hints of “if imeem eventually bars sites like MySpace from using Snocap” etc, there’s really no news on what ended up happening, or at least none that I’ve found easily.
But the main thing is that my question obviously is not a SNOCAP question, it’s about another site making a claim about myspace that I am writing myspace to find out whether it is true or not. Whatever, though, myspace being full of shit and not user friendly is nothing new. I’m no closer to selling my mp3s online. And searching google for “sites to sell mp3s online” or “embeddable music stores” doesn’t really help much. Or is everyone just using itunes these days? I know there are sites like soundclick and cdbaby, but what say you, internet?
In the meantime, I’m forwarding my correspondence to imeem & will keep you updated.
