I can say from personal experience, as a performer, Joe is anything but ‘safe’. His act constantly varies between impromptu musical numbers, comedy, and strikingly intense and real moments. “I’m always looking for an opportunity to break the fourth wall [When I perform]” He tells me between sips of Pabst “People have this idea that there’s a separation when they watch a performer, a distance, and when you break that barrier, when you do something they don’t expect and communicate with them directly, there’s real power there.”

Here is a video of me telling a story about auditioning for a feature film and doing a dramatic reading of a poem that I had to learn for one of the two scenes I was supposed to learn.

The movie is called the Crab, it’s a great script and I was psyched to get a chance to audition. I had a good audition but didn’t expect to be seriously considered. This is a real movie with real money behind it and they needed (and apparently found, sweet!) a real trained actor to carry the film. Cool. Totally understood. But it was fun to do the piece (which the character reads to a dinosaur(!)).

Anyway, the quality is shit but I hope to have a replacement up soon. Filmed at Penny’s Open Mic, natch.

I’m well aware that people will call some of what I do slam, but I don’t consider myself a slam poet. I think that any time you call yourself something, someone will come along and say you’re not that, and those arguments are so retarded that it just makes me want to avoid them all together. You’ll notice that my music videos are tagged “punk” too, not because I think I’m punk, but because someone searching for punk videos could plausibly be interested in an aggressive guitar player, drunk, pleading, in an underground black box in New York City.

I may be wrong though.
